“What It Means to Be Me” is a picture book with eight short stories. This book is a great way to initiate conversations about sensitive topics and everyday issues. And some stories are just for fun! It contains lighthearted stories of bullying, losing a loved one, discrimination, friendships, God, and more!
Our objective is to uplift build confidence and give a child assurance they are not alone when dealing with unfamiliar situations. It also encourages children to embrace being inquisitive and not be afraid to ask questions. A child may not remember every detail of their life growing up, but they will remember what made them smile when they were dealing with an issue. We can’t shelter our youth from life, but a story that understands what they are going through will help a little. Get to know the characters below.

“Chrissy’s Pet Rock”
Chrissy is a whimsical girl faced with bullying. We tell children to tell someone if they are bullied or see someone being bullied. However, sometimes, there’s no one around to tell. Chrissy’s story is a situation she handles herself. Her confidence is magnetic and teaches at the same time.
“Is God Real?”
Questions, questions, and more questions. Tim’s inquisitive mind won’t rest until he gets answers. He has an intense conversation with a pastor and wants to know if God is real. As far as he’s concern, God doesn’t exist.
“The Group”
Carrie and Jane are best friends with many differences but have one thing in common. They both are friendly to everyone they meet. Their story displays their kindness and the brilliant idea of starting a group named “Beauty” for kids who are different in a big or small way. To these girls, prejudice isn’t a problem; it simply doesn’t exist.
“Where did she go?”
Innocent and sweet, Emily’s world is turned upside down when she finds out some devastating news that will change her life forever.
“I Love My Brown Skin”
Not all lessons are taught in a classroom. James learns the hard way the meaning of pride. He and his father are celebrating his spelling bee victory, and soon after, their night is rudely interrupted in the most inhumane way.
“The Spelling Test”
Taking test is not at the top of Tommy’s list of fun things to do. He hates it. He doesn’t think he’s smart enough to pass his spelling test. He’s feeling hopeless and helpless. There’s only one thing he can do … Check out his story!
Talk about independent! NIYA says she’s five so, what’s wrong with her staying up all night. She has things to do and places to go. “I’m Not Sleepy” shows Niya telling her mother she refuses to go to sleep. She later regrets her decision after dealing with the consequences.

I don’t have a comment on the whole book I’ve only read 2 stories to my kids and they were lovely. “Is God Real?” I liked that question and the answer was to the point and sweet. Chrissy was a trooper.

Whew!! I can’t say what hasn’t already been said. This book is amazing. The attention to detail is what makes it interesting. Where did she go? And I love my skin can be individual books by themselves. My kids and I enjoyed this read very much. The words are easy enough for 7&8 yr olds to read alone.

We are fans of this book!!!! I questioned how possible is it to have sensitive topics such as grieving, racial profiling, bullying etc. be relatable to young kids. My curiosity pushed me to purchase this book and I was in awe. “Where did she go?” Muah… Perfecto! Each story had a wonderful message that kept you engaged from beginning to end.

Parent of a six year old reader. This book is beginner friendly. “ I’m not sleepy” is my daughters favorite. I love that positivity was the end goal for each story. We are looking forward to book 2.

I’m a father of an African American boy. “I Love my Brown Skin” is the realist story I’ve read to him suitable for his age. Yes, fathers read to their kids too. Thanks for not being afraid to speak on it!

I like the Garrison quote on this site. This book is a gift you can open over and over again and the stories inside will remain a treasure for years to come. Reading “Where did she go?” To my daughters helped me appreciate how precious our relationship is. We thought all the stories were funny and amazing. Little James‘s story was powerful. Merry Xmas! Is God Real? Gave me memories of my days going to church with grandma wondering why! I love the end and what the pastor said to little Tim. My son had no problem with the words and he really enjoyed the Brown skin story. He had questions, some, I had no answer for. But, it made both of us think.

At first glance this book looks like it’s for a toddler. That is far from the truth. My 8yr old son read it and “We” enjoyed every story. Especially “I love my brown skin”

Wow! This is more than a kids book. It’s playful conversations about real issues. The two stories that stand out are “ Where did she go?” and “Brown Skin” I think it’s very creative how the story lines of death and racial profiling are tastefully made entertaining and informative.

Another recommendation from Goodreads that proved to be amazing! I‘m a supporter of new indie authors. Hats of to this author for creating content outside the “norm.” bullies, grief, discrimination are touchy topics but this book nails it!! Highly recommended.

I was sorta forced to get this book. It looked childish. Didn’t want to waste my money or time. Read story of Chrissy it was cool. Then church boy got my attention. Lil girl losing her mom kept my attention. Story of James, blew my mind. Well done. Stories 1-8 wasn’t a waste, it got me.
HAPPY NEW YEAR!

The craziest thing I was told is that a children’s book needs fantasy and make believe to be great. This book proves that statement false. The stories in this book are real issues suitable for kids but not overtly preachy. “Where did she go?”
“I love my Brown skin. “ Excellent titles and content.

My daughter got this book as gift from her teacher. During a conversation in my car she says I know how God is real. I asked, how? She says, “He’s real because of the good we feel.” I asked, where did you get that from. She pulls out her book and said from here. I thought how cute. She said there are other stories in the book. Thanks to LA traffic during rush hour when she asked if I wanted her to read them I had no choice but to say Ok. She started reading. I found myself turning down the music, asking her to repeat what she said, cars honking because I’m into these sweet stories. “Where did she go?” I cried. I felt joy listening to I Love my brown skin! And The Group was our favorite. Thanks to this book I was very entertained on the drive home, any book that gets a child talking about God and loving your neighbors is banging!! And thanks again to traffic I’m able to right this ridiculously long comment.

Social alienation is problematic for my daughter age 8. Her quirkiness is a magnet for bullies. The story Chrissy’s Pet Rock was adorable. She was able to read it easily and identify with Chrissy’s attitude. I know it’s a short story but it’s a start to building her confidence!
